Vanmutti Perumal- Mayiladuthurai , Tamilnadu

Situated 5 Kms from the town of Mayiladuthurai at Kozhikuthi village is the abode of  Lord Sreenivasa Perumal . The Lord here stands tall as if touching the sky and is referred to as  Vanmutti Perumal.  The idol is made of Athimaram (fig tree) similar to the one at Varadaraja Perumal temple in Kanchipuram.

The legend is -A king who was ailing from chronic skin dosha was cured here at this place . He was guided to this place by Lord Shiva . The king stayed here for 48 days and took a dip in the holy viswaroopa pushkarani and got relief from his ailment. He also had the privilege of having Lord's Vishwaroopa darshan in a fig tree ( Athi maram). The king later became sage Pipplar.

Later a  Chola king also sought the help of the sage to get relief from the sins he committed during war . Sage advised him to worship Lord Srinivasa Perumal here . The king too had a vision of lord in the fig tree. Spell bound by the beauty of the darshan, he got the sculptors to carve an idol from the single Athi tree and constructed a beautiful temple here.
The famous Pipplar maharishi theertham is believed to cure skin diseases.
