Udupi Sri Krishna Temple

Udupi Sri Krishna temple is  an important pilgrimage centre  in Dakshin Kannada region and is  very famous  like the Guruvayoor temple of Kerala.  Here one would see beautifully decked up Krishna's idol here, with a churner in one hand and a rope in the other.  Devotees worship God here , through a window . As per the legend, it is believed that the Lord here turned to the opposite direction to give darshan to an ardent  devotee, named Kanakadasa  who was denied entry into the temple. The  main door of the sanctum   remains closed here, as the worship is only through the window.The window is  known as Kanakadasa window.

Photography is banned inside the temple.

The temple is situated right inside the town and it  provides free meals to the devotees here everyday.

Just outside the Krishna temple, there are two ancient temples of   Siva known as  Anantheswara and Chandramoueeshwara. I have included the photos of these two temples also.

How to reach- The town of Udupi is 60 Kms from Mangalore and it is well connected by air, rail and road. There is a railway station at Udupi itself and all major trains halt here.
Accommodation -  There are good hotels at Mangalore as well as at Udupi.

    Thanks for he beautiful photos. One of them looks like a yakshagana image of Krishna.

    there is a similar story of an Alvar who belonged to the lower caste and hence, was not allowed entry into the Srirangam temple. He used to stand in Kaveri river and sing the praises of Vishnu.

    Well, we have talked about this business of non-entry and prohibition of photography in your last post, so I will not repeat it here. I hope all these temples change their rules. But this is a beautiful temple.

    Good Evening!
    We had been to this wonderful Krishna Temple.I loved this ambience very much.As net gives lots of problems,I could not see the photos.
    It's Vishu coming up....We wake up to see Lord Krishna seeking the blessings of Lord for a prosperous New Year!
    And in Kerala Goldenshowers are full of yellow and bright blooms!

    Hi chitra good to know that you visited the krishna temple.I am very found of going to this temple.I love the ambiance and the melodious music we hear here mostly form the carnatic vocalists.

    @A the lord Krishna's idol inside is a feast to the eyes with diamond decorated over the body.Please do visit some time during our visit to the south India.

    Udupi Sri Krishna temple never tires me. I love the temple, the ambience and the simply buy yummy food. 'Kanakana kindi' and the idol of Krishna facing the 'kindi' is fascinating.

    Good pictures Chitra. I visited Udupi way back in 2005. It seems to have got repainting done. The statue at the entrance seems to have changed.

    Banning photography inside the temple is something i disagree with! Yes, you can ban taking pictures of the main daitey. Others they should allow. The same case with Lingaraj temple at Bhubaneswar. The sculptures inside this temple are wonderful and unfortunately you cannot photograph them. Too bad!

    Your post on Udupi temple is quite informative and useful! Pictures good as usual!

    Loved the temple, looks very ancient. Unique too, never heard of darshan from the window.

    The peace experienced inside the temple is so divine that one feels like staying back there...hope the lord gives me another opportunity to have his darshan at udipi..nice coverage

    I have heard the name udupi sree krishna but never visited here... are these uduppi brahmins and uduppi hotels from this locality?

    So we need to use the window to see the lord.. interesting.. something like the small hole in the Poornathrayeesha temple behind the idol of lord poornathreeshan...

    Insignia, Kindi means window right? you must be familiar with kannada language is it not? The window also appears bright and resplendent.

    Gopalan ,It would be better if photography is allowed so that many can enjoy the beauty of sculptures and architecture especially for those who cannot make to these temples or any historical place.

    Abhi, In Poornatheeeyasa we view thru' a small slit in the wall. This is big window and the image of the God is clearly visible.

    The photos look so real.

    I like everything about udipi, the food, the place ,the language(tulu) and the humble people. I too had made a post on Udipi food (http://shreshar.blogspot.com/2010/02/divine-taste-of-udupi-cuisine.html)last year.

    Good work Chitra...but you have made a factual error. Udupi is not one of the Vishnu divya desams - though it occupies an important place as a Srivaishnava temples.
