Kamakshi Amman temple is very near to the Ekambareshwar temple . This is one of the sacred Shakti peetams and the only Amman temple in Kanchipuram . The deity here is enshrined in a sitting posture with sugar cane in one hand, parrot, lotus and chakra in other. The deity here is the Parabrahama Swaroopini. A Sree Chakra has been installed in front of the deity by Adi Shankaracharya. In the inner prakarm there are many shrines dedicated to Varahi, Ayyapan, Anna poorni, and Adi Shankaracharya.
Near the main entrance , on either side are deities of Kalabhairavar and Mahishasura Mardhini. The dwajasthambham is also near to this and there is a lion, the vehicle of Amman in front of this. The sanctum sanctorum of Amman is plated with gold and the temple tank is very attractive. There is also a shrine dedicated to Vishnu inside the temple. This temple is under the control of the Kanchi Shankara Mutt.
Temple timings: 5.30 a.m-12.30 p.m , 4 p.m-8.30 p.m

Again, I am in love. I especially love the statues by the water.
ReplyDeleteYou are quite accomplished with your camera.
:-)
As always, a most informative and interesting post - especially the information regarding the articles held in the hands of the deity, what exactly do they symbolise?
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos as well. The sculptures by the tank I particularly like.
The sugarcane bow symbolises our manas, our mind . She is the power who directs our mind towards the worldly things and she is also capable of directing towards Brahman, the eternal bliss. Next the five flowers symbolise the five senses, which as said above can be directed in any way according to her blessings. She also holds an ankusa a goad which symbolises anger which can be the bloody anger which frustrates us often on the divine anger against the bad feelings in us . The rope or pasha symbolises the bonds which can bond us to the world or to herself the eternal Brahman ! Thus she symbolises the Parabrahman the true swaroopa of consciousness. Her darshan is the greatest fortune for one born on earth and gives the phala of having darshan of all other temples.

ReplyDeleteThank you so much, I need all the appreciation I feel good.
Petty Witter,
ReplyDeleteThe sugarcane bow, yes it is a bow and lotus are symbols of love , they are actually the weapons of Kama- the God of love. She wants to engage everyone with the language of love.
The chakra is for protecting her devotees.
Never been to this temple. I particularly liked the sculptures by the tank !

The Kamakshi Amman temple located in Kanchipuram, Tamilnadu is one of the ancient Sakthi peethas. The presiding deity Kamakshi Amman gives darshan to devotees with a lasso and a goad in the upper two hands hand and a bunch of flowers in the lower two arms along with a parrot perched on the flower bunch and a sugarcane bow.
